Difficulties of Spanish Grammar

7 - 11 July  2008

This course of 31 classes has 2 objectives:

1. To bring the teacher closer to becoming bilingual, allowing him or her to reach level C2 (maestría). This course offers Spanish grammar from a communicative perspective and deals with complicated aspects of the grammar.

2. It gives teachers a formula for teaching grammar: to take a more profound look at the methodological problem when teaching grammar in the classroom.

An intensive course of 31 sessions of conversation whose fundamental objects are to increase fluidity of speech and lexicon, and to increase the sensitivity and consciousness of different cultural identities.

Participants are offered the possibility through various themes, always related to the Spanish culture (society, politics, economy, daily life, gastronomy, art, literature, cultural differences + similarities, histories and possibility of discussing an elected topic), practicing and developing communicative ability and conversational skills.

Methodology of the Teaching of Spanish Language and Culture

March 17 - 28, 2008 (Semana Santa)

In this course we give the participating professionals (teachers) supplemental information which allows for use and growth of previous knowledge. This course, in a dynamic atmosphere at a high speed pace, will be presented as an open forum, where participants can express doubts, problems and interests.

During the first week, one will delve into structure, methodology, culture, society and daily life and in the second half, during the last week the students will test knowledge they have learned by exchanging roles with their professors, giving them hands on opportunity to utilize what they have learned.

This course is not only geared towards Spanish teachers who are already teaching Spanish: if you are going to start teaching Spanish, this course will be very helpful to you!
 

Preparation Classes for DELE
(Spanish Proficiency Exam)

The completion of our course prepares the student through practice, leading to the mastery of the five modules of the DELE exam , to be able to pass and be dominant of the language and communicative strategies of the corresponding DELE level.

To understand your advantages you must know the following:

IEMA is an Associated Centre of Instituto Cervantes and an official preparation site for the DELE exam held in cooperation with University of Salamanca and Cervantes Institute.

What is more, IEMA is participating in a working group at Council of Europe in adapting the language examinations to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (“CEF”).

IEMA’s general Spanish courses are adapted to these requirements. Therefore you benefit from a double advantage of learning Spanish according to the criteria of the “CEF” and the Cervantes Institute for DELE preparation.

This means that at the end of one of IEMA’s “General Spanish Courses” you will be able to express yourself, understand - in short: communicate. To demonstrate your knowledge and skills of Spanish 1. you will be offered by IEMA, after an exam free of charge, a document certifying your Spanish level according to the “CEF”; furthermore 2. you should sit the DELE exam – both is useful for your CV!

Preparation classes for DELE exams are designed to help you to pass DELE exams, through instruction in all 5 modules. 

Classes will emphazise on grammar, lexique and some aspects of oral expression, as well as reading comprehension, writing, listening and oral expression.  

What is the benefit from taking the preparation classes offered by IEMA?

To pass the DELE examinations an appropriate language competence is not enough. What you will also need is to know the format of the exam, the specific examination techniques and the skills of handling different types of exercises required at DELE examination.

Preparation classes for DELE exams therefore will familiarize you with the specific typology and character of DELE exams. You will be shown the different modules and types of DELE tests. We will also provide you with documents of former DELE exams. The teacher will guide you all the way to ensure serious, detailed and specific DELE preparation. So you will be able to pass the examination.

Preparation classes for DELE exam can be chosen as:

- Solely private lessons – you request the number of lessons
- Individual classes completing the general Spanish course
- Group classes completing the general Spanish course
(the minimum number of participants is 5 participants per level/class), three times per week (90 minutes / class).

And from 11-22 August: Special preparation course for DELE INTERMEDIATE. Please ask for details!

Before the classes start your Spanish level will be assessed by a test. We also take into consideration your individual requirements, needs and expectations.

Teaching materials for the DELE preparation have been carefully developed by IEMA on the basis of the requirements of the Syllabus of Cervantes Institute.

Year round

This course allows combining the advantages of a private Spanish course with total immersion through living with your teacher.


This programme is available throughout Spain. It includes food, accommodation, activities and 6 classes each working day from Monday to Friday. 

Let us know which aspects of the language you particularly wish to study, why you need Spanish and what interests you besides Spanish classes. There is a great demand for this course. Number of placements is limited.
 

Salud Medical Spanish for the Health Professional

July 7 - August 1, 2008 (132 classes)

Since 1995, IEMA has been giving Medical Spanish courses. The fundamental objective of the intensive course (132 classes) is the learning and proficiency of Spanish based on contextual situations where specific medical Spanish is required. 

Within this general objective, we divide the goals into two areas of professional development:  1) the relationship of the student with professional colleagues (doctors, nurses and other professionals in the health field), and 2) the relationship of the student with his/her patients.

In this manner, students develop a balance of related theory, grammar and lexicon on the one hand and the daily usage of communicative Spanish while practicing medicine on the other.

Upon completion of this course, we offer the student the opportunity to take the official exam “Spanish of the Health Sciences” offered with the collaboration of the Certification Board of Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Alcalá University (Madrid).

Besides the mentioned dates, it is possible to take the course privately. Groups may ask for special dates.

Legal Spanish
and Introduction to the Spanish Legal System

November 3 – 14, 2008

The general objective of this course (54 classes) for the Law Professional is to familiarize the student with the professional relationships and law environments including basic concepts of Spanish legislation and judicial language.

Besides dividing the general program (Constitutional Law and the Spanish State Model, General Law, Civil Law and legislation as it refers to different themes), we adapt the program to the interest of our students.

 

Spanish for Business

The objective of this course is to have the student become a master in the knowledge of business Spanish related to the four skills that allow him to become communicatively competent.

In the event that the student’s objective is to obtain the Official Certificate of Business Spanish (in collaboration with Madrid Chamber of Commerce and University of Alcalá), we will work to familiarize him with the content and form of the exam so as to allow him to pass the exam.
 

Certificate course
”Basic Certificate in Business Spanish”

September 1 – 12, 2008:  74 classes

This course is oriented to the acquisition of the knowledge and necessary skills for the student to become enveloped within the business environment and the adequate preparation to be successful on the official exam given by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Madrid and the University of Alcalá.

How to Negotiate Successfully in Spanish

All year

This one week course (Fifteen 90 minute sessions and five 60 minute sessions) is geared towards professionals that develop their work in the world of Spanish business. The main objectives are to obtain a general insight into corporate Spain, and develop an understanding of cultural peculiarities and values along with a knowledge of communication both on a social and business level with Spaniards.

 

¡Con soltura! – Intensive Conversation course

 September 22 – October 3, 2008
Prerequisite:  Intermediate level Spanish

“¡Con soltura!” - “Speak like a Native!” is an intensive conversation course. Its objective is practicing and developing conversational skills. The students have the possibility of electing the themes for some of the classes, always relating to Spanish culture and society. 

This course (20 classes) can be combined with the mini-group course.

 

Spanish for University Students

Why is Avila so especially fascinating for university students?

Avila is an ancient university city (the University of Saint Tomas was founded by Isabel the Catholic), so you will have the opportunity to make many Spanish friends.

Not many foreign students know that Avila is a university city (four, in summer even five universities!) and therefore you have the chance to meet and get to know first of all Spanish students - from all over Spain. Participate in their parties, social events and cultural exchanges!

 

And finally the Police Academy, with their 5000 students between 18-30 years of age from all over Spain, contributes further to the youthful atmosphere of Avila.


For these reasons, you can have a great deal of contact with the youth of Avila, and Spain for that matter, making Avila an ideal place for a university student´s course.

Initiation to the World of Spanish Wine

Time:  Open (except September)

This seminar to the lovers and connoisseurs of wine that want to enhance their understanding of the culture of Spanish wines; and, at the same time, learn aspects of Spanish society and history.  The student will learn to “taste” wines, visit a winery and they discuss the most important artistic and cultural aspects of Castilla-Leon.  Some Spanish language classes are included so that the participants can feel comfortable in their daily encounters while in Spain.

The majority of these classes will take place in the restaurant “El Almacen” and will be directed by Julio Delgado, awarded the title “Nariz de Oro” (“Nose of Gold”), one of the best sommeliers of Spain.
 

Holy Week Programme 

March 17 – 21, 2008

Holy Week is a plethora of devotions and variety of rites that lead us to understand the intensity of the Spanish people in their own environment at a specific moment. It opens a door to the understanding of this language and the people who speak it.

Through this program we offer the student the possibility of becoming familiar with the mystical environment including games and typical foods associated with this holiday.

The morning classes include practical Spanish language and the afternoons are dedicated to enjoying cultural activities related to the Holy Week.
 

“Avila – City of Legends" 

May 26-31, 2008

In this program cultural activities organized by the city itself for the student are taken into account giving the student the singular position of becoming a participant in the action rather than a spectator.

During these dates, the city of Avila transforms itself into a living representation of its legends put into place by theatrical groups.

There will be duels fought, attacks against invaders of the city, stories of impossible loves…  These legends and stories recreate other times and other people permitting us to travel back into a world of illusion perfectly combined with classes of practical Spanish.
 

Tapas – Gastronomy in Miniature

June 23 - 28, 2008

In this course, IEMA attempts to envelope its students in the knowledge of Spanish gastronomy in general, emphasizing the importance of Tapas (appetizers).

If Spanish cuisine is considered one of the best in the world, Avila, then is a perfect example of the mixture of Spanish cuisine and its products.

Sea food Tapas

This course also encompasses important cultural and artistic aspects of Spain. Some practical Spanish language classes are included so that the participants can feel comfortable in their daily encounters while in Spain. 

The relaxed behaviour of the Spanish when they are “going out for tapas” and the Avila competition of Tapas allow us to present a program in a unique setting which is Avila itself.
 

“Avila - A meeting with the Middle Ages”

September 6 - 11, 2008

This course is directed toward those people that want to learn about Spanish culture and history, in a festive environment - during the famed Medieval Market of Avila. The city of Avila makes it possible to visualize and see all lessons directly related with Medieval times.

The program ends with conferences and discussions about the most important artistic and cultural manifestations of Spain and includes some practical Spanish language classes so that the student will feel comfortable in their daily encounters while in Spain.
 

Flamenco and Santa Teresa 

October 6 - 11, 2008
with the option of extending until October 15

Both the traditional Avila Flamenco Week and the feast of Saint Theresa take place in the second week of October.

This program has been designed for those people who wish to enhance their knowledge of the Spanish culture and history through the love and strength of Flamenco.

 

At the same time it attempts to bring the participant closer to the life, work and times of Saint Theresa.

We include discussion of the most important artistic and cultural aspects of Spain along with including some practical Spanish language classes so that participants will feel comfortable in their daily encounters while in Spain.

 

SPANTRANS

Advanced Spanish to English translation
25-28 November 2008

RATIONALE

To provide a series of practical, small-group training modules addressing (1) the art and science of translating from Spanish to English and (2) the working practices of a professional translator.

 TARGET AUDIENCE

Those individuals engaged in working or preparing to be examined and/or to work as a professional translator whether full or part-time, whether native speaker of Spanish or English, whose job specification current or intended involves in whole or part translation from Spanish to English and who wish to improve (1) their professional translation competences across the Spanish > English divide and (2) their business acumen. Numbers restricted.

CONTENT

The contents of the respective modules are selected for their practical and market-led nature addressing the programme's two themes:

1: Translation Skills Development (80% of course content) involving translation from Spanish of general, scientific, financial, agrochemical, leisure/tourism, legal and technical texts inter alia.

2: Routes to market (20% course content) involving general business practice (including setting up, marketing, indemnity, notarisation, working for end-users and with agencies etc.).

The core modules are complemented by (1) advanced language instruction in Spanish or English, (2) individual tutorials, (3) discussion groups and (4) social activities.

STRUCTURE

Four days (Tues - Fri incl.) of intensive programming involving 24 hours of presentations, lectures, practicals, workshops and fora supported by handouts, publications, e-learning and appropriate materials (realia) complemented by open access and pre/post-programming.  Social programme includes welcome supper and farewell dinner.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Course delegates are required (a) to be either native speakers of English or Spanish with competence in the other language of no less than Grade 3 on a 5-point scale of competence (e.g., LLB Guidelines) of a level capable of following and contributing to a programme of this nature, (b) to be computer literate, (c) to have regular access to e-mail and (d) to have proven and appropriate capability across the languages divide such as may need to be confirmed by a test or independently verified. There is no charge for assessment prior to course commencement.

Course fee: Tuition incl. registration, course materials and accredited certification: €495.00 (Four hundred and ninety-five euros) or £345 (Three hundred and forty-five pounds: GBP). 25% discount for students in full-time education.

CV Dr J L Kettle-Williams BA (Sp&Fr), MLitt(Sp.Lang/Ling), DipGuaraní, FIL(Sp)

(Doctorate: Language Selection in Paraguay - A Sociolinguistic Survey)

Dr J L Kettle-Williams holds qualifications in Spanish, French, German, Russian, Quechua and Guaraní.  As a Hispanist, Jay Kettle-Williams has experience of Spain and the Americas where he has not only worked in a variety of business sectors but also conducted extensive academic research into language(s) and the range of cross-cultural issues faced by Amerindian and differing European cultures.  As a Hispanic philologist & varietologist with interests in Arabic and Esperanto, he has published and broadcast extensively and lectured widely in HE, in which he was employed for 17 years1, and elsewhere in the business community with particular reference to language(s), linguistics and the cross-cultural issues of the Hispanic and related (European/Muslim/New World) areas and beyond. 

Formerly National Coordinator to the Government's LX programme2 with responsibility to the DTI, the DES and the TA, Jay Kettle-Williams has many years of experience in the design and delivery of foreign language and all manner of language/culture-related programmes within the maintained Higher Education and independent commercial sectors3.  He was a member for over a decade of the CNAA's senior subject specialist panel (Spanish Studies) to Higher Education (ref: Bristol, City, Coventry, Durham, Ealing, Kingston, Liverpool, Manchester, Middlesex, North London, Staffordshire, Wolverhampton ...) and has worked in close association with institutes of Further and Higher Education, having been external examiner in Spanish Language and Hispanic Studies  inter alia to universities (incl. Southampton and St Andrews) and former polytechnics (incl. Middlesex and Wolverhampton).  A member of the HEFCE panel (Iberian Studies/Spanish Language, Linguistics), he broadcasts (BBC and Independent) and writes in the professional and general press on languages and related issues. 

An experienced translator 4 (incl. UNO), trainer of translators and regular  (court) interpreter for the police, for prosecution and for defence counsels as well as for international corporates,  he also specialises as a Language Consultant to Industry on language(s) & all manner of language, language-related and (business) cultural issues (ref: Marcoms).  In this capacity he not only directs and delivers in-company training programmes but is engaged as a Registered Business Language Consultant (ref: Routes to Market) to the DTI (LEXAS), now referred to as the Export Communications Review Service (UK Trade and Investment). Between 2002 and 2004 he was also engaged on a two-year part-time contract (DfES) as Regional Officer SE to the Regional Language Network (ref: National Languages Strategy). He is Director of his own Portsmouth-based company (Polyglot Solutions), sister organisation to Verbatim Language Services (Portsmouth-based), run by his wife Rosina, and to Bona Fide Translations (London-based) of which he is Co-Director.

Notes:

1.Formerly demonstrator in Spanish language and then visiting lecturer (10 years) to St Andrews University,  and in charge of the Spanish Studies Degree programme at Portsmouth Polytechnic (now Portsmouth University), he lectured not only on Spanish Literature, Contemporary Society and Language (for which he developed the entire Spanish examination syllabus at Portsmouth), but also on his specialist subjects: Linguistics; Philology; Varietology, Amerindian Linguistics and Specialised Translation.  He founded the Language Centre at Portsmouth.  In wider terms his responsibilities to that institution focused on marketing.  He still lectures on regular invitation in Higher Education on Specialised Translation (Theory, Practice and Business Application) and matters linguistic.

2.With responsibility for the establishment (formation, professional development and business planning) of 20 UK venture companies (budget £4m x 2 under HMG matched funding) based on centres of HE complemented by commercial expertise/provision) to provide language and language-related/communicative/export  services for  international business.

3  In this regard, before establishing his own independent company, he was under a tapered contract to an international training organisation as National Marketing Executive responsible for the promotion of language and language-related services to British business.

4 As a Fellow of The Institute of Linguists since the 60's, he has regularly examined for the Institute and was the first Principal Examiner (Spanish) to the Institute’s Diploma in Translation; Founder of The Institute’s Central Southern Regional Society; Regional Examinations Officer (15 years) and Editor for more than ten years to the Institute’s journal.  He is currently a Member of Council, formerly Vice-Chairman responsible for External Matters (Marketing, Membership, PR etc.).  He regularly offers training programmes (commercial & academic) and consultancy for in-service translators and for linguists preparing to work as professional translators and language consultants.
