Philosophie - Zielsetzungen.
Instituto Español “Murallas de Ávila” (IEMA) wurde 1989 gegründet und hat seinen Sitz in Ávila (Altkastilien, Spanien).
IEMA hat sich auf Intensivkurse Spanisch und Kurse in Kultur und Gesellschaft Spaniens spezialisiert, in erster Linie auf Kurse für Spanischlehrkräfte (Fortbildungen) und Schülergruppen. Daneben sind im Programm u. a. die traditionellen "Mini-Gruppen-Kurse", zahlreiche spezifische Kurse wie z. B. medizinisches Spanisch oder Spanisch für Juristen. IEMA kann auf Lehrkräfte bauen, die seit 2 Jahrzehnten mit Begeisterung unterrichten: Hier liegt der Schlüssel zu einem erlebnisreichen Programm.
Von jeher steht bei IEMA die Sensibilisierung für fremdkulturelle Aspekte im Mittelpunkt. Der Unterrichtsblock „Kommunikation“ (= „Pragmatik“) dient der Umsetzung dieser Absicht. Somit verbessern die Schüler/innen nicht allein ihre Spanischkenntnisse, sondern erwerben und erweitern kommunikative Fertigkeiten. Es darum, die Kursteilnehmer an interkulturellen Erlebnissen zu bereichern, gleichzeitig wichtige Einsichten auf moralischer Ebene zu ermöglichen wie etwa Toleranz und Offenheit.
Hierzu gehört auch die Unterbringung bei Einheimischen. Die meisten unserer Gastfamilien arbeiten seit über 10, einige seit fast 20 Jahren mit uns zusammen. Wir widmen einen erheblichen Teil unserer Arbeit der Kommunikation mit den Gastfamilien: Unterbringung wird bei IEMA bewusst als Baustein bei der Vermittlung von interkulturellen Erlebnissen und Einsichten gesehen.
Kooperationen - Auszeichnungen.
IEMA gehört verschiedenen Organisationen an, die das Studium der spanischen Sprache fördern. Neben der Anerkennung von Regierungsseite ist IEMA eine der vom staatlichen Instituto Cervantes akkreditierten Partnerschulen und Zentrum zur Vorbereitung auf das offizielle (nun sechsstufige) DELE-Examen – siehe www.examendele.com. Durch einen Kooperationsvertrag ist IEMA seit 2002 Mitglied in dessen Netz.
Auch garantieren verschiedene Gütesiegel, z. B. das Siegel der auf Qualitätsprüfungen für Spanischschulen spezialisierten Abteilung der Universität Alcalá (Madrid) von öffentlicher Seite Qualität. Zudem zählt IEMA auf die Zustimmung der Regierung von Kastilien und León.
IEMA erhielt 2005 den Kulturerbepreis (Premio Patrimonio Cultural) und wurde vom Consejo Ibero-Americano für den Premio Iberoamericano "en Honor a la Excelencia Educativa 2008" ausgewählt.
IEMA arbeitet mit der Industrie- und Handelskammer Madrid bei der Durchführung von speziellen Wirtschaft- und Handelsspanischprogrammen und -examina zusammen, die am Ende des Kurses an unserer Schule abgelegt werden können.
Als Prüfungszentrum zur Erlangung des Diploma Internacional de Español haben unsere Kursteilnehmer die Möglichkeit, besonders ihre mündlichen Sprachfertigkeiten unter Beweis zu stellen.
Ein Kooperationsvertrag mit der Universität Ávila öffnet unseren Schülern ab 18 Jahren weitere Möglichkeiten, z. B. ein „Schnupperstudium“ unter dem Programmnamen „Tirocinium“: nach einem vorbereitenden Sprachkurs, dessen Länge von den Vorkenntnissen abhängt, können die Teilnehmer aus einer grossen Anzahl an Universitätskursen Veranstaltungen wählen und diese zwischen 1 und 3 Monaten studieren. Ideal für Abiturienten, die „Uni-Luft“ schnuppern wollen und das mit einem Auslandsaufenthalt verbinden möchten, gut auch zur Bereicherung des Lebenslaufs (www.iema.com/programas).
Als Vorreiter bei der Anpassung seines Kursprogrammes an die Rahmenrichtlinien für das Erlernen von Fremdsprachen des Europarats hält IEMA Kontakt mit der Kommission zur Anpassung der Curricula und Sprachprüfungen an die neuen Richtlinien. In diesem Zusammenhang ein Hinweis:
In der Sektion „Die Hausaufgabe der Woche“ finden Schüler- und Lehrer/innen gleichermassen zusätzliches Übungsmaterial für die drei Hauptsprachniveaus A, B und C. Ein „Link“ zur Homepage Ihrer Schule wäre daher empfehlenswert.
Sprachtest Spanisch (kostenlos).
Sie können gerne den Sprachtest (101 Fragen in 45 Minuten beantworten) probieren, der unter www.iema.com/examen zu finden ist. Besonders Ihre Schüler sollten ihn nutzen. Kein Problem, wenn gewisse Fragen unbeantwortet bleiben oder falsch - das liegt meist daran, dass die entsprechenden Grammatikkapitel noch nicht /nicht ausführlich behandelt wurden. Keine Sorge also! Unter "observaciones", möchten sie bitte schreiben, dass sie Ihr Sprachniveau kennenlernen möchten. Es wäre interessant für Sie, die Resultate Ihrer Schüler kennenzulernen, wozu sie Ihre E-Mail-Adresse und Name der Schule angegeben sollten, wir schicken die Auswertung dann gerne auch an Ihre /Ihrer Schule Adresse. Warum ist Ávila gerade für Kursreisen geeignet?
Die Weltkulturerbestadt Ávila ist klein und überschaubar (63,000 EW). Sie liegt etwa 1 Stunde nordwestlich vom Flughafen Madrid-Barajas bzw. etwa 1,5 Stunden südlich vom Flughafen Valladolid.
Ávila ist ideal für Minderjährige, gilt sie doch als die sicherste Stadt Spaniens. Dies ist ein Faktor, der gerade bei Kursfahrten wichtig ist, wo es auf Reduzierung von unnötigen Risiken ankommt. Für die Gruppenleitung ist es in Ávila besonders einfach, "alles unter Kontrolle" zu halten.
Ávila ist ideal für alle diejenigen, die zum ersten Mal nach Spanien kommen. Die Stadt wird von vielen Lehrern als “Minilaboratorium“ oder “Experimentierfeld“ bezeichnet. Sie berufen sich auf die groβe Freiheit der Schüler, mit Spanien hier einen ersten Kontakt knüpfen zu können, ohne immer permanent aufpassen zu müssen, wie es in grösseren Städten erforderlich ist.
In Ávila ist es noch möglich, “typisch spanisch” gebliebenes Ambiente zu erleben. Hier ist es leichter, mit Spanien in Kontakt zu treten. Grundlegende Verhaltensformen können in Ávila ungeniert ausprobiert werden, Vorurteile korrigiert, neue Einsichten gewonnen werden. Das IEMA-Feldforschungsprogramm trägt dabei entscheidend zum Gesamterfolg des Programms bei.
Die Gastfamilien in Ávila sind besonders freundlich und verfügen über jahrelange Erfahrung. Obwohl viele Gastfamilien durch die Aufnahme von Schülern etwas für den Haushalt zuverdienen wollen existiert in Ávila nicht die Mentalität einer Unterbringungsindustrie wie es in bekannteren Sprachkursorten üblich ist.
In Ávila sind alle Wege kurz - alles ist zu Fuβ machbar! Eine bequeme Stadt, wo man Zeit und Nerven spart. Nur in einigen begründeten Fällen greifen wir bei der Unterbringung unserer Kursteilnehmer auf Familien zurück, die am Stadtrand wohnen; hier kann dann der preiswerte Linienbus genutzt werden.
Das Klima ist angenehm - wegen der Trockenheit und Höhenlage (1130 M), daher im Sommer auch nicht so heiss wie andernorts in Kastilien.
Ávila ist, trotz seiner Nähe zu Madrid, noch recht preiswert (ein Kaffee kostet 1 Euro).
Ávila ist touristisch besonders wertvoll, eine Weltkulturerbestadt. Ávila gilt immer noch als „Geheimtip“.
Ávila zieht diejenigen an, die ernsthaft studieren wollen und Ablenkungen vermeiden möchten. Bei IEMA treffen Sie auf besonders motivierte Leute - das beeinfluβt günstig das Schulambiente und den Lernfortschritt. Im Laufe der Jahre hat sich bei IEMA ein Schülertyp gebildet, der seinen vollendetsten Ausdruck in der Gemeinschaft der IEMA-Herbststipendiaten findet (siehe www.iema.com/becas).
Man kann natürlich auch in Bars und Discos gehen, allerdings ist es von sonntags abends bis einschliesslich mittwochs ruhiger als in grösseren Städten, wodurch die Jugendlichen eher in die Betten und nicht „in Versuchung“ kommen. Das Programm ist für die Begleitpersonen dadurch hier viel einfacher zu handhaben und die Leute lernen insgesamt erheblich mehr, sie sind auch besser ausgeruht. Einen „spanischen Abend“ mit Tapas etc. haben wir auf Wunsch bislang immer gerne organisieren geholfen!
Für Schüler bieten sich zahlreiche Kontaktmöglichkeiten. In Ávila treffen sie auf junge Spanier, die hier studieren oder die Gymnasien besuchen. Das Ambiente für Jugendliche ist hervorragend und wird von IEMA für Begegnungsprogramme, verbunden mit der IEMA-Feldforschungsarbeit genutzt. Besuche im Unterricht oder Begegnungen mit einheimischen Schülern können auf Wunsch und nach Möglichkeit arrangiert werden. Zahlreiche Internetcafés und Jugendbegegnungszentren ermöglichen exzellente Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten vor allem für unsere jüngeren Schüler.
Vielfältige weitere Freizeit- und Vergnügungsmöglichkeiten sorgen dafür, daβ keinem langweilig wird. Es gibt zahlreiche Kinos und Cafés, wie auch die städtische Bibliothek und Treffs - generell kostenlos organisiert von der Stadtverwaltung: Internet, Sport, Einzelveranstaltungen.
Exkursionen in die nähere Umgebung, z. B. nach Madrid, Salamanca, Segovia, Toledo, El Escorial oder das Gredosmassiv bieten sich an (jeweils ca. 1 Stunde entfernt).
Ávila ist eine Stadt im Landesinneren, in Kastilien. Ávila wird von denjenigen besucht, die mehr ein authentischeres Spanien, seine Lebensformen, Kultur, Geschichte, Traditionen kennenlernen möchten. Es wird hier bewusst ein vielseitigeres Programm geboten, als es oftmals in Städten am Strand der Fall ist, wo Strand und Bars ausreichen. Seit einigen Jahren bieten die Regionalregierung von Kastilien und León, die Stadt Ávila und private Anbieter unterschiedlichste Aktivitäten, wodurch Kastilien den traditionellen "Sol y Playa"-Tourismus an Attraktivität überholt hat. Mittelaltermarkt, Legendenrunden, Flamenco-Wochen, Tapas-Wettbewerbe, klassische und moderne Musik - z. B. Sting (aus seiner Familie kamen bereits Schüler zu uns), Bob Dylan, Paco de Lucía und andere sind einige Beispiele.
"Castellano" - Normspanisch
Ávila hat für
Sprachschüler den Vorteil, daβ
hier “Castellano“
– nach der Staatsverfassung das offizielle Spanisch - gesprochen wird.
Insbesondere für Anfänger oder Leute mit mittleren Kenntnissen wird hierdurch
der Einstieg in die spanische Alltagskommunikation erleichtert. Während in
anderen Gegenden Spaniens andere Sprachen oder Dialekte gesprochen werden,
fallen in unserer Region (Kastilien) das hier gesprochene Castellano mit Spanisch zusammen,
wodurch beim Lerner unnötige Verwirrungen und Sprachvermischungen ausgeschlossen
sind. Es muss aber eindeutig klargestellt bleiben, dass andere Sprachen oder
Dialekte nicht weniger wert sind! Im Gegenteil, sie bereichern die Sprache und
halten sie lebendig.
Welche Programme sind möglich?
Seit vielen Jahren führt IEMA Gruppenprogramme für Schulen durch; Sie können sich deshalb auf fundierte Erfahrungen stützen.
Im Anschluss finden Sie einen Programmvorschlag für eine Kursreise nach Ávila. Enthalten sind Sprach-, Kultur- und Freizeitveranstaltungen, sowie der erprobte IEMA-Unterbringungsservice und zusätzliche Leistungen.
Da es sich um Gruppenprogramme handelt, können einerseits die Inhalte ganz an den Interessen der Kursteilnehmer ausgerichtet werden, andererseits erlaubt dies, die Programme zu einem günstigen Gruppentarif anzubieten. Auf rechtzeitige Anfrage ist es möglich, daβ IEMA Ihrer Gruppe einen Raum zur Verfügung stellt, in dem die Gruppenleitung eigene Veranstaltungen durchführen kann.
Wir empfehlen einen Aufenthalt von möglichst zwei Wochen, um den Lerneffekt zu intensivieren und die Anreisekosten zu “amortisieren“. Sollten Sie zwei Wochenenden einschliessen können, nutzen Sie diese für Exkursionen!
Es hat sich gezeigt, daβ die IEMA-Sprach- und Kulturprogramme trotz des auf den ersten Blick umfangreichen Inhalts sehr gut ankommen. Sie sind sehr erlebnisreich und wirken stark motivierend für das weitere Spanischlernen. Vor allem die Projektarbeit rundet das Erlebnis Ávila ab.
Ein abschliessender Hinweis: Als Partnerschule des Instituto Cervantes sind wir u. a. auf DELE-Vorbereitung spezialisiert. Es geht hierbei aber nicht allein um Vermittlung von Sprachkompetenz – unsere Kurse bereiten auch auf die technischen Schwierigkeiten vor, auf die die Schüler bei der Bewältigung der Prüfung stossen. Warum dieser Hinweis? Weil zahlreiche Schulen eine Kursfahrt mit Sprach- Kulturprogramm UND DELE-Orientierung, gar Vorbereitung, einer rein touristisch ausgerichteten Fahrt vorziehen; Sie bereichern nebenbei die CV´s ihrer Schüler durch die Option, die DELE-Prüfung zu absolvieren. Vorbereitung auf DELE ist besonders dann angeraten, wenn der Aufenthalt Mitte Mai, August oder November liegt.

Für diese Programme ist jeweils ein Minimum von 10 Schülern erforderlich, die
mehr oder weniger dieselben Spanischkenntnisse haben. Der definitive Preis hängt
in erster Linie von den An- und Abreisedaten (Zeitraum und Dauer) sowie
Detailwünschen (Transfer, Unterbringung bei Gastfamilie, Exkursionen) und der
Teilnehmeranzahl ab.
Begleitende Feldforschungsarbeit
Diese kostenlose Projektarbeit bereichert das
Programm und rundet es in der Praxis ab. Das Gesamtprogramm erhält dadurch einen
hohen Gesamtwert. Es wird nicht nur ein direkter Kontakt zur Bevölkerung
hergestellt, wodurch landestypische Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen
kennengelernt werden, sondern auch alle sprachlichen und
kommunikativ-pragmatischen Fertigkeiten werden gefordert und vertieft:
mündliche Produktion (durch Fragen), Hörverstehen (die entsprechenden
Antworten), schriftliche Reproduktion und Transformation durch Niederschrift der
Information, Ausarbeitung der Information in Nacharbeit mit Hilfsmitteln
(Internet, Grammatik, Wörterbucher), Besprechung und Diskussion im Unterricht,
Vortrag des Ausgearbeiteten. Für alle Sprachniveaus ab A2 geeignet. Hier folgt eine Einführung

“¡España es diferente”!
Interculturalidad, sociedad y los españoles
“Trabajo de campo”
“¡España es diferente!” se dirige a jóvenes de entre 14 y 30 años. Se estudian aspectos de la sociedad española a través del entrenamiento de varias destrezas lingüísticas, en primer lugar, las destrezas creativas. Además de conocimientos comunicativos se adquieren destrezas de recepción y producción, ambos de forma oral y escrita – en la recogida de información, elaboración y posterior presentación en el aula. Una enorme ventaja es el acto comunicativo durante la recogida de información.
Normalmente se elaboran los trabajos en grupos de dos alumnos. Varios grupos pueden trabajar los mismos temas, nunca juntos, para mejorar los resultados. Cada grupo tiene uno o dos temas por semana de estancia. Cada sesión de entre 60 y 90 minutos.
Se busca la información en contacto directo, sobre todo con los jóvenes – y adultos españoles: en los institutos, cybercafés, en la calle, en los parques, disco-bares y discotecas, escuelas de idiomas y universidad, cines, bares de comida rápida, biblioteca pública… Aparte de aprender de otras formas de vida, se fomentan contactos interculturales.
Otras fuentes de información que pueden utilizar son: la tele, radio, revistas, periódicos, la familia anfitriona, biblioteca, internet, …
El profesor de IEMA coordina y guía a los equipos. Se comenta el progreso de los trabajos en clase durante el bloque de conversación, se analizan y discuten problemas, se dan explicaciones.
El volumen de cada trabajo será de unas 2 a 3 páginas (escritas a mano).
El último día de clase se presentan ante todos los alumnos los trabajos que destacan por su interés y originalidad.

THE SCHOOL
The Instituto Español Murallas de Ávila (IEMA), which was founded in 1989, is
located in Ávila, near Madrid.
IEMA
specialises in intensive language and culture courses for high school and
student groups (and individuals) as well as in further education courses for
Spanish teachers. IEMA also offers a wide range of Spanish courses for specific
purposes – such as medical and legal Spanish.
What makes IEMA special, are the teachers. Highly qualified and experienced,
they have been bringing passion, love of the subject and cheerfulness to the
classroom for 20 years.
Our focus of interest has always been to develop sensitivity and awareness to other cultures. Especially the teaching unit “Communication”, cultural activities and a field work programme contribute in achieving this aim.
Therefore, studying at IEMA is not only about improving your language skills, but first and foremost about acquiring and developing communication skills and openness in interaction with people from different cultures. Students this way also gain in tolerance and openness. The intercultural experience intends to enrich the students which will prepare them for further study programmes at college or university, but most important for their future.
IEMA organises accommodation in host families with whom we have been working together for many years. The accommodation programme with a local host family is an important component giving intercultural insights.
The standard of the IEMA programmes is recognized by various educational bodies. Since 2002, IEMA is accredited by and associated with the Instituto Cervantes, which has appointed IEMA an official centre for the promotion and the preparation for the DELE exams of the Instituto Cervantes (official Spanish examinations). Therefore, IEMA offers also special DELE-courses. For detailed information concerning the DELE-exams, please, look up www.examendele.com.
Various accreditation systems assure the quality of IEMA programmes, for example University of Alcalá (Madrid), specializing in quality tests regarding language schools. In 2003, IEMA became the authorized centre and co-ordinator of different programmes for the Autonomous Government of Castilla y León.
IEMA was awarded the “Premio Patrimonio Cultural” 2005 in recognition of contribution to the promotion of local heritage and in 2008 the Consejo Iberoamericano has selected IEMA for the award “en honor a la excelencia educativa 2008”.
Furthermore, the school collaborates with the Chamber of Commerce in Madrid in running Spanish courses for professionals (business, tourism, medicine) and officiates as examination board for the International Spanish Diploma (DIE) which can be taken at the end of the course.
A cooperation agreement with the Catholic University of Ávila provides IEMA students with various opportunities: they can for example try out academic degree study programmes by attending the “Tirocinium”: after a preparatory language course (students get university credits), students can choose activities out of a wide range of courses the University offers. These courses can be studied between one and three months. This is perfect for high school graduates who would like to get an idea of what University life in Spain is like and at the same time want to spend some time abroad enriching their CV or looking for an academic orientation (www.iema.com/programas).
Since 2004
IEMA has been in contact with the commission of Council of Europe adapting the
new European language exams to the Common European Framework of Reference.
Concluding, we would like to invite you to visit the section “The task of the week”. Here both students and
teachers can find additional exercises in the three main language-levels A, B
and C. This is why we recommend establishing a link to your schools’ homepage.
Spanish language level test (free of charge).

You may also test the level of your students, we can re-send you the result.
Students therefore should give us your e-mail-address (on the examination form).
You can use the test for your Spanish lessons, you are free to adapt it for your
lessons, for example leaving out sections you did not treat in lesson. Once we
send you the result, you will clearly see what
chapters of Spanish grammar for example must be studied or deepened, so nobody
should be concerned if there are mistakes in some parts of the exam!
THE IEMA LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL PROGRAMMES
With the experience of 20 years in existence IEMA has been arranging language and cultural programmes. So you can trust in our experience.
Enclosed you will find a sample programme. Language and culture as well as leisure activities are included, additional services and the IEMA accommodation service.
Being a group programme, it is possible to adjust the content to the interests of the students on the one hand, and on the other hand this gives us the opportunity to provide you with a favourable group rate. Given due notice, IEMA will be able to place at your disposal a room where events can be organised by the supervisors.
We recommend a two week-stay (if you come from overseas a longer stay is recommended) to intensify the learning progress and to “amortise” the journey expenses. At least you should include two weekends and enjoy them making an excursion!
Due to our experience, the IEMA language and culture courses have been very well received, although they appear to have an extensive content at the first sight. They are very exciting and have a very motivating effect to further Spanish learning.
Concluding, we would like to mention that we, as a partner school of “Instituto Cervantes”, are specializing in preparation for the official DELE examination. This preparation is not only about imparting language knowledge but our courses also prepares for technical difficulties the students might have handling their exams. Attending the DELE exam, students enrich their CV. We highly recommend DELE preparation if your stay takes place in the middle of May, August and November.
This programme can be designed to last from 1 up to 16 weeks. We enclose a sample programme but we would like to underline that it only gives you some ideas of possible topics you might find interesting etc.

every group, requirements and the level of
the participants, so please let us know which topics you would like to include,
we will be happy to adapt this programme to your interest.
Taking all those advantages into consideration you will see that a language and
cultural programme at IEMA will enrich life of the young students and prepare
them well for their further study programme at school, college or university as well as for

ÁVILA – THE IDEAL PLACE FOR A SPANISH PROGRAMME

Ávila is located in the centre of Spain, in the region of Castilla y León. It is
only about an hour away from Madrid and 1.5 hours away from the airport of
Valladolid.
Ávila is a small and easily accessible town (63,000 inhabitants) that has been declared World Heritage City by UNESCO. Ávila is an exciting historical place, rich in masterpieces of art and architecture of all centuries.
Why is Ávila especially qualified for high school trips or university programmes?
Ávila is an ideal place to learn Spanish, especially for minors and those who visit Spain for the first time (it is said to be the safest city in Spain). This is an important point as many parents are concerned about the safety aspect.
High school and university teachers sometimes call Ávila a “mini-laboratory” or an “experimental ground”. They refer to the huge freedom the students can enjoy socialising and communicating with Spaniards learning more about their lifestyle and customs.
It is easier in Ávila to mix with the Spanish and learn more about Spain. Here, the students can openly test basic behaviour, correct their prejudices and gain new insights. The IEMA-fieldwork programme contributes essentially to the overall performance of the programme.
In Ávila everything is within easy walking distance. It is an easily accessible town, which saves time, as well as avoids getting lost. Only in cases of reasonable necessity, we do resort to the use of host families living in the outskirts and these students can use the low-priced regular bus of Ávila.
IEMA offers lodging with host families. These are exceptionally friendly and dispose of years of experience.
The climate is pleasant – neither muggy nor damp and cold – because of the dryness and altitude (1147 metres, 3500 feet above the sea level).
Ávila is, despite of its proximity to Madrid, comparatively low-priced (one coffee costs 1.20€ or less). Although it is an exciting World Heritage site it is still a "tip".
Ávila is the right choice for those who want to learn Spanish and avoid distractions. At IEMA, you almost exclusively meet highly motivated people – which has a positive effect to the school ambience and to the learning progress.
Of course, you can go to bars and discos, but from Sunday evening to Wednesday it is less crowded than in bigger cities so that the students won’t be tempted to go out late at night. Therefore, the supervisors are better able to handle the programme and the students will learn more because of the fact that they are rested. But of course, we always help to organise a “Spanish Evening” with Tapas.
Ávila offers numerous possibilities for the students to mingle with Spaniards. Here, they meet young Spaniards that are studying in Ávila or attending its high schools. IEMA always helps students to make contact with local people by arranging get-togethers like, for instance, visits in schools or universities where the foreign students get the chance to take part in a lesson. If required, we also arrange encounters with local teenagers or help initiating youth exchange programmes. The field work programme also contributes to the finding of valuable contacts.
Ávila has to offer a great variety of leisure activities. Especially the cinemas, the Local Council’s public facilities for young people, the library and the cyber-cafés are a good opportunity for our younger students to get in contact with the young population. Furthermore, Ávila has to offer Naturávila, a big sports- and leisure park, as well as 350 tapas bars and clubs and a large number of various cultural festivities throughout the whole year.
“CASTELLANO” - STANDARD SPANISH
Unlike in other regions in Spain, where other languages and dialects are spoken, people of Ávila speak “Castellano”. “Castellano” is the official Spanish according to the constitution. This is an advantage especially for beginners and intermediate learners who will more easily adapt to Spanish daily communication. But here we have to mention that other languages and dialects don’t have less value. Far from it! They enrich our language and keep it alive.
CULTURE AND
TRIPS
For the culture-vultures and history buffs Ávila has everything to offer. Its
myriad ancient alleyways which are a delight in themselves take the visitor to
countless historical sites. Ávila is the perfect place to go for people who have
an interest in getting to know an authentic Spain with its people, landscape,
tradition and history.
Ávila’s geographical location in the centre of Spain makes it ideal for all
those who wish to travel further: Segovia, Salamanca, Madrid, El Escorial,
Sierra de Gredos and Toledo are no more than one hour drive away. Even Celtic
forts can be visited.
Spanish Language and Culture Programme
for High School Groups
Here we offer you a 3 week sample programme, however programmes between 1 and 16 weeks are possible. For high schools from overseas, the best is a 4 week programme, groups from Europe come usually for 1 or 2 weeks.
Morning lessons (from 9.00a - 1.30p) are usually divided in Grammar, Pragmatics (how to act in Spain with the language, taking into consideration the different mentality and culture of both cultures - the Spanish one and yours). This sample programme includes details of what is given during the morning only for the first week as contents are going to be adapted to interest.
Culture lessons: here students are learning about Spain and the Spanish! This sample programme gives you some ideas for choosing those items you might find interesting, but we have much more, just ask for them - we concentrate always on what young people are interested in:

A Field Work
programme during a Spanish programme,
for High School Groups at IEMA, Avila
“Spain is different” is a field work programme for young people between 14 and 30 years of age. This is done in the form of interviews. This way, students learn, meet and live aspects of Spanish society through training in different linguistic skills, primarily through developing creative skills. Also, they acquire listening and creative skills through communication activity, both in oral and written form, gathering information, creating a written resume and finally an oral presentation in the classroom.
Of great importance for the language learning progress and the communicative learning act in a very different cultural situation, which is new for the students, is the communicative phase and the gathering of information which is important for understanding Spanish society.
As a rule, the work is done in groups of 2 students. Different groups can work on the same topic, but never together, in order to improve the results. Every group has one or two topics each week. Each interview lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
Information is collected through direct contacts, especially with young people and adults in Spain: in the schools, internet cafes, in the streets, parks, disco bars and discotheques, language schools and universities, cinemas, fast food and tapas bars, public libraries... Also, to learn about other forms of life, this encourages intercultural awareness and helps to create contacts in Avila.
Other sources of information, which they can use, are: TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, host families, library, internet...
The IEMA teachers coordinate and lead the teams. They make comments on the results of their work, analyze and discuss problems, give explanations during the conversation classes. The amount of work is to be 2 to 3 pages (hand written).
On the last day of the course they present the most interesting and original works to all the students.
